WHAT WE DO

We collaborate as a partner with existing youth oriented organizations including schools, nonprofits, and community groups by adding value to their existing programs through our summer experiential & academic programs.

OUR GOALS

Our goals for the summer experiential program are to:
  • Expose students to a college environment early in their grade school years so they continue high school with an understanding of what they need to do to prepare to enter college
  • Answer the question of "why" post secondary education is relevant to students
  • Help discover which career fields especially those involving STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math) are of interest to students
  • Educate students on what opportunities for training and education are available through the military including service academies and scholarships which may or may not require military service.

OUR STRATEGY

The program targets rising high school freshmen who have the capacity to excel in school but whose current grades or scholastic achievement do not reflect this potential.  The strategy underlying all Reach For Tomorrow summer programs is to engage students in activities which most have never attempted in order to open their eyes and minds to a world beyond their neighborhoods, families, and friends.

Uses Existing Public and Private Resources to:
  • Inspire all youth and especially "at risk" youth
  • Empower local adults and existing Community Based Organizations (CBOs to complement the efforts of parents and schools
  • Inform young people about higher education and training opportunities
  • Use a service academy or college experience to help students set academic and professional goals for the future

WHO IS IT FOR?

Our summer experiential program is focused on students predominately in grades 7-10 who are chosen in the local community based on metrics which include: grades, attitude, attendance, participation in school activities as well as extracurricular activities, and who would benefit from a collegiate immersion. Much of this is left up to the local partnering organizations who are using the summer experience as a reward.

RFT’s Targeted Student Group:
  • Grades 7-10
  • C average (but capable of better)
  • Those you would trust alone in your own home
  • Completed at least 25 hours community service
  • Interviewed with RFT volunteers- local adults
  • One RFT trained adult chaperon per team of 5 students

WHO HELPS?

After receiving training from RFT, we rely on volunteers to assist students to build on this shared, unique experience. The summer experience is a critical component of the subsequent academic tutoring and guidance programs, as this serves as the initial short-term goal for each student as well as an opportunity to bond with their Adult Volunteer.

Chaperons from the students' home area or school provide oversight and mentoring as they work directly with student teams as small as 5 participants. These chaperons get to know the students through these commonly shared adventures and all return home with a better idea of each other's strengths and weaknesses.

A Program Backed by Data

Picture
We coordinated the end of program survey with Dr. John Trammell at Randolph Macon College, Virginia who conducted the evaluation of GEAR UP students for the State grant to determine the impact a one week experience might have on students.  We observed demonstrable changes in the opinions of students on a wide range of questions.
